The problem: Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize--and migrate into your popcorn. "They stay in your body for years and accumulate there," says Naidenko, which is why researchers worry that levels in humans could approach the amounts causing cancers in laboratory animals. DuPont and other manufacturers have promised to phase out PFOA by 2015 under a voluntary EPA plan, but millions of bags of popcorn will be sold between now and then.
The solution: Pop natural kernels the old-fashioned way: in a skillet. For flavorings, you can add real butter or dried seasonings, such as dillweed, vegetable flakes, or soup mix.
Budget tip: Popping your own popcorn is dirt cheap.

I have worked in both the dairy and beef industries...
Beef- buy from local butchers or farms (not feed lots!) who raise cattle on pasture. I worked at the largest slaughter house in Canada processing incoming cattle and most of them are so pumped full of hormones it's insane. Don't eat meat from any of the main grocery chains or fast food joints in Canada, the company I worked at distributed to all of them.
Milk- As a dairy farmer I know the milk I drink is safe within Canada. There are very strict regulations of what you can give cattle. Organic milk really is no different from any of the stuff you would buy off the shelf in Atlantic Canada. I don't know the regulations in the USA so I wont comment there. Some "organic" farms are considerable less clean and animal friendly than many of the non organic, normal farms. If you like a brand of milk, go to its website and have a look at the farms that they get their milk from. Smaller farms, or family farms usually produce a higher quality of milk with better animal health and treatment. Healthy cows milk more and then there is no need to be pumped full of meds and hormones. Commercial farms are another story.
As a farmer I hate to see people giving wrong information out about our products. Just remember to buy local and support local small farms and don't get so hyped up on this "organic" trend, because if you knew what little it takes to be certified organic you'll be very disappointed.
What I don't understand from all these health related articles is that most of our food is toxic and Dupont Chemicals even admits to it. So we will voluntarily phase out PFOA by 2015... so Dupont chemicals don't mind killing people in the meantime. Wow what regressive thinking... we live in the 21st Century of civilization but our politicians are bound by Corporation threats so nothing gets changed.
So why is that these products are not banned from our shelves for our health and safety. I guess the Drug and Food Ministry here in Canada cannot see that these products need to be banned and removed from our shelves.
I guess money is more important than the value of a human life! That is what truly saddens me.... that money is worth more than a human soul. I believe we have not progressed at all... it is still Roman Civilization all over again... "Civilization" I believe the word means slave...

It is a lot cheaper to produce non organic foods because over the last 50 or so years, we have allowed our food industry to be taken over by Monsanto (seed, fertilizer etc.) and the large food industries to take them over. It is all about profit. In allowing this to happen, we have also caused destruction to our envionment (earth, water, air) becuase of the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These are all petroleum based, so in each of our bodies we are all carrying several pounds of petroleum.
Most organic produce are produced by small farmers who use natural fertilizers and pesticide, use labour intensive techniques and look for heritage seeds (very few around because Monsanto bought the seed houses out in the sixties). The GMO seeds Monsanto sells produce more but the vegetables lack taste and nutrition and are dependent on chemical fertilizers. Go see the documentary "Think Global, Act Rural"
Sorry, not on the "Organic Foods bandwagon," and I find it a throw back to my friends from the 60's. I am a health professional , and if these people who write these articles would be objective, they would find that even "Certified Organic Crops," are not subject to FDA and EPA guidelines, that Farmers who feed the masses are subjected, too. A Prime example is the "certified organic berries," that Costco sold recently, tainted with Hepatitis A, the "organic lettuce epidemic on the west Coast about a year ago, that had previously been thought to have been from undercooked ground beef, at fast food establishments such as "Jack in the Box,". I have made it a policy to buy only NON ORGANIC food products, that are regulated by EPA and FDA guidelines, and they are also, more economical for my family, and I.
