Try an organic and representational look rather than a geometric motif. In a modernist beach house near Oyster Bay, New York, designer Christina Murphy went for a whimsical, stylized lily pad theme. "The floor is the room's biggest surface area, so I thought, why not a pond? Besides, I was tired of all the geometric floors everyone's been doing," says Murphy. The floor painting is by Christopher Rollinson.
