You can't put clothing with turpentine on them in the washing machine! It can and very likely will cause a fire. The same goes for clothes with gas on them. Both substances are combustable and the fumes can build up under the lid of the washer. The washer's motor is not explosion proof. Sparks from the motor can ignite the fumes and cause an explosion. I was surprised that such dangerous advice was being given from Reader's Digest. Most, if not all washing machines have care instructions and warnings concerning this underneath the lid.
