Journalists land in Sochi, hilariously live-tweet horrifying hotel conditions

Amid the seriousness that surrounds the Sochi 2014 Olympic games (like the reported terrorist threat against the U.S. team and Olympians complaining about runs being dangerous), there is a rather odd and hilarious story brewing in Russia. Namely the way reporters and athletes are responding to the "high class" accommodations they'll be living in (and by high class, we mean just the opposite)

CBC THE NATIONAL, TWITTER

CBC THE NATIONAL/TWITTER

According to our Twitter feeds (and they're, obviously, very reliable), hundreds of people have arrived in the small resort town to find their hotel rooms are nowhere near finished. There've been reports of yellow water, broken toilets and, even, zero furniture.

Also see:

Though the International Olympic Committee has stated 24,000 rooms were created for the event (and that 97 per cent of them were in perfect condition), the people we've been reading dispatches from would have to disagree.

Read on for a few of the online rants we've been reading. (Keep in mind the conditions are not funny, but the responses we've been reading are.)

Are you excited for Sochi?

Any one from outside still is a lot better off than the locals, so stop ****.  You are probably witnessing the death of the Olympics as we have known them. We need to get back to events like the World Cup for hockey and get away from these hugely expensive shows that really do waste an enormous amount of money and resources. Imagine one of the major items is the destroying stray dogs. Ask them what they think of the Olympics.

To all you journalists in Sochi: you're just a bunch of spoiled babies that are used to their 5 star hotels. Not all countries are as well off as we in the west are. My job has me traveling extensively and some accommodations are less than stellar, to put it mildly, so I deal with it, do my job and move on. So suck it up princesses Quit your whining make the best of it and do your job. Do you have any idea how many people would love to travel to ( first class no doubt ) and see the Olympics for free and get paid for it? Hell I would sleep in a pup tent for the opportunity. So boo hoo to all you journalists because you are the ones doing most of the complaining.

Russia hasn't climbed the free capitalist democratic ladder yet. Too many corrupt politicians in power starting with Putin. Hard to believe but it is worse than Washington.

A country sitting on half trillion dollar national fund does not have enough money to send stray dogs in Sochi to shelters in the outskirts.  money is there but it is for the corruption by officials and soon will find safety in the swiss bank accounts.  to make up for it, losers are culling dogs by thousands and picking up even worse image as a country.  hiding the sinful acts like murdering innocent animals does not do any good, it is another form of evilness.  20 years on but commies are still the corrupt same.

We need to remember that our first world expectations are going to clash with the reality of life in Russia. Most people in Russia have recent memories of living behind the "Iron Curtain" when everything was seriously rationed, and it was not abnormal to wait in line six hours for a few rolls of toilet paper. What our average middle class citizen considers normal is far beyond the grasp of almost every average Russian. The government has had many years to perfect propaganda, so we should not be surprised!

Someone here said "my job has me traveling extensively and some accommodations are less than stellar, to put it mildly, so I deal with it, do my job and move on. So suck it up princesses"

The thing is that the journalists in Sochi did exactly that -- THEY DID THEIR JOB. That's what they were sent there for -- to write about Sochi!! Once everything settles down and once competitions start, they will be writing about sport events. And i totally understand their frustration upon arrival. They were assured by the host country and by the game organizers that everything was ready, which is why journalists had their expectations for adequate living and working conditions.

They only spent $50 billion, what do they expect?

Are our Athletes obligated to remain in those 'less than adequate living conditions they're experiencing  in Russia'? Can something be done to demand they be provided appropriate living conditions for the games in Sochi?.  If Russian Athletes came to Canada, I am certain we would provide them with the best living conditions and meals, etc., to maintain their strengths and self confidence to boost their performance in the games.

Utterly disgraceful! Not sure why they chose this country to hold such a time honoured event but what did you expect when they did choose it??? Doesn't surprise me at all. Will still watch the games to cheer on these world class athletes but have no interest in seeing the sides on Russia or their people!

We had tickets pretty well purchased for the Olympics but we decided last minute not to go, the main reason were security fears, Now after see these disastrous pictures , and hearing stories of all the things going on such as poisoning dogs, muzzled reporters, jailed protestors and so on I am glad we never attended. I thought Russia was a changed country but obviously I was wrong, this is a modern version of the cold was communist 80's Russia.

Ha.Did you expect something else? False hopes. And for that person that is surprised- Do not flush toilet paper down the toilet- Isn't the same in Mexico? No Internet connection? why don't you use the phone instead or ask people for info? It should be working. And I wouldn't recomend drinking water from any tap in any country-there is always option- buy bottled one. And if you dont know to close or open the curtains- dont get frustrated by pulling them, so they fall on your head.
Anyway I wish athletes stay safe and use their brain, not just muscles.Concentrate on why you are in Sochi and the best to all of you!

What kind of malfunction was taking place when they thought of this place. What the was the IOC thinking or not thinking of. Who came second?

I thinks it's all part of Russia's diabolical scheme to demoralize other countries athletes so they (Mother Russia) have a bigger medal haul when it's all said and done. Remember, Putin WAS a former KGB agent and I'm sure he's very familiar with psychological warfare. Besides, Russia never was enamored with the West and with Putin in charge he wants' to revert the country back (in his opinion) to the glory days of the Soviet Union and this is one more way of Putin poking his finger in democracy's eye.

I guess the Sochi officials were too busy poisoning and slaughtering dogs.  Shame on them for such a disgusting 'solution" to their dog problem.  I heard on the news where they have their own city employees hired to kill these dogs....by the hundreds.  They would be better to put the money towards a control program such as spay/neuter instead.  Totally disgusting!
